images (2)Antonio Gades was born in Elda (Alicante), in November 1936.

His first contact with dance took place casually at the age of  15th when Pilar López’s incorporated him to her ballet company under the artistic name of Antonio Gades. With his master, he studied classical dance alongside all disciplines of popular Spanish dance. In 1960 during his first tour to Japan as the  principal dancer,  Gades realized that his means of expression would be the most authentic flamenco and from then on, began to forge his very personal choreographic style to bring to light the essence of dance.

In 1975, due to the political situation in Spain and a deep sense of moral responsibility, he  turned away from the dance. Only three years later he returned to the dance with  a tour in the United States and with the invitation of the new government to be in charge of the creation and direction of the National Spanish  Ballet.

In 1981, after a meeting with director Carlos Saura, his ballet “Bodas de Sangre”  turned into a movie. The duo Gades / Saura became  the largest broadcasters of the  Flamenco art worldwide. In 1983 the film “Carmen” was  born. In 1989 came “Fuego”,  ballet inspired by the movie El Amor Brujo and in 1994 in Genoa, was the debut of Gades’ last choreography, the “Fuenteovejuna”.

Gades has received numerous awards being the latest, the Special National Award of Honor “for Mastery in flamenco dance” from the Chair of Flamencologia of Jerez de la Frontera .

Antonio Gades died in 2004, after having created a foundation to protect the integrity of his artistic legacy and to and help spread his work, fostering, from it, a greater knowledge of  the Spanish dance worldwide. download (2)

“Fuego” is inspired by the ballet “El Amor Brujo” by Manuel de Falla and was designed by Gades and Carlos Saura and integrates the celebrations of the 10th anniversary of Antonio Gades  death (1936-2004).

The Compañia Antonio Gades  will perform “Fuego” on  the stage of Municipal Theater of Rio de Janeiro on September 27th, at 4:00 & 9:00 pm and on  September. 28th  at 4 pm

One of the most respected Russian dance companies in Rio

6 September 2014

The Russian State Ballet

images (1)With 32 years of history, the company is under the leadership of choreographer Viatcheslav Gordeev, its creator, artistic director and general manager. With his forty soloists, the main goal of the Russian State Ballet is to preserve the heritage of Russian choreography and Western Europe, in parallel to the search for new forms of dance, adding modern touches to classic, without losing its  essence along the way.

Representative of the union between old and new, the Russian State Ballet is one of the greats of the ballet world. The company emerged from the dream of Irina Tichomirova, prima ballerina of the Bolshoi (the most famous Russian company) and director of the Moscow Philharmonic Society in 1979.  Since then, major stars of Russian groups such as the Kirov, the Stanislavsky and the Bolshoi, joined the troupe. images (2)

Reconciling tradition and innovation is the company’s proposal. Keep the tradition for centuries and still make it appealing to experts and laymen is another major challenge of this art, whose power to thrill crosses cultures and generations, delighting young and elderly adults, educated or not.

The Company has been in Brazil in 2008, having performed in eight Brazilian cities, and in 2013, when they made an extensive tour to 19 cities with great success. Now, The Russian State Ballet is back to  presents the show “Sleeping Beauty” on the  stage of Vivo Rio – Flamengo on September 14 at 7:00 pm.
