Guanabara Palace or Isabel’s Palace

300px-Palácio_Guanabara_em_LaranjeirasThe Guanabara Palace in neoclassical style is located in the old Rua Guanabara, current Rua Pinheiro Machado in Laranjeiras.

Was built by the Portuguese José Machado Coelho in 1853  to be used as his private residence until the 1860 when it was renovated and became the residence of Princess Isabel  and her husband,  Count d’Eu in 1865.

From then, it was known as Isabel Palace.  At the time, the  access to the palace was made by Paissandu Street, which therefore was adorned with a hundred of  royal palms trees. The building became  the official residence  of the presidency of the republic but since it became the headquarters of  Rio de Janeiro  State Government in 1960, it became the stage for important meetings between Heads of State and major policy decisions.300px-Guanabarainterior
