Do you know the History of Mother’s Day?

7 May 2016

The origin of the day

mae-fraes-dia-das-maesWe will find the first evidences of a celebration of Mother’s Day in the ancient Greece. The Greeks honored the goddess Rhea that was considered the common mother of all beings. They offered her gifts and tributes.

The Romans, who followed a very similar religion to the Greeks, also honored the goddess Cybele, mother of the gods. The celebration took place between 15th and 18th March and lasted three days.

But, it was only in the early Christianity era that the commemoration took a Christian character because the Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus was celebrated.

In England during the seventeenth century, we could find a more similar celebration to the present days. It was called  the “Mother  Sunday’s”  where during the Mass, children handed out gifts for their mothers and the youngers who were working away from home, gained the day in order to visit their mothers. So it was a day dedicated to visit and giving gifts to mothers.

In 1904, in the United States, Anna Jarvis proposed the creation of a date in honor of the mothers. Her idea was to create a date in honor of her own mother because she was an example of woman, as she had performed community service during the American Civil War. Her requests and her campaign have worked and the date was made official in 1914 by the US Congress. The law, which declared Mother’s Day as a national party, was approved by President Woodrow Wilson. After this initiative, many other countries have followed the example and included the date on their calendar. dia-das-maes-1398

After these events, the date has spread around the world but also won a commercial character. The essence of the date was being forgotten and focus shifted to the idea of buying gifts , imposed by the   stores that had  purely commercial objectives. This fact displeased Anna Jarvis, who was very disappointed to see that the character of solidarity and love of data were lost. She fought against this proposal and in 1923, she led a campaign against the commercialization of the date. Although with much repercussion, the campaign did not manage to change the focus.

In Brazil, Mother’s Day was first celebrated on May 12th, 1918, by the YMCA of Porto Alegre. But it was only in 1932 that President Getulio Vargas signed a decree  saying Mother’s Day would always be on the second Sunday of May following  the molds of the United States.

Among all the rights of a woman, the greatest one is to be a mother.

Tomorrow is this day. So, we wish all the mothers of the world a Happy Mothers  Day!
