In Cinelandia, cradle of the city’s cultural activities and where before existed the historical Cine Palacio, was opened on August 26th, 2016 the Riachuelo Rio Theater.

The inauguration was in great style. Teatro Riachuelo Rio opened its door with the musical “The Girl from Ipanema, love is bossa” that depicts and values national culture through a show packed by classic bossa nova.garota_ipanema

The restoration of the space took two years and has become a plural space that combines music, theater, literature, debates and dances to attract the most diverse public. The new theater is open from Tuesday to Sunday, all day, with cycles of lectures, daytime shows, movies and shows.

The space has been completely redesigned and modernized. It has approximately 3,500m² of built area, an audience for 1,000 people, high technology, digital innovations and sound  and light equipment  of last generation.

The former Cine Palacio facade of neo-Moorish architecture was designed by the Spanish architect Adolfo de los Rios and was a meeting point for artists, intellectuals and politicians. The building was built in the nineteenth century. It opened in 1890 as the Brazilian National Casino and in 1901 came to be called the National Casino. In 1906 it was renamed Palace Theater, and it worked well to 1910.

Over the years the building changed its name a few times. In 1917 it was titled Majestic Cinema, when it displayed the first sound film in the country “Broadway Melody”. In 1929 it was called Palace Theater and finally, in 1943, became the Cine Palacio.

The new Teatro Riachuelo Rio is  located five minutes from the airport and ferries and a few steps from the subway and VLT stations.
